In December 2013, at the age of 9, Esme was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a type of cancer that produces immature bone cells. This website chronicles Esme’s fight with this ominous cancer, starting with diagnosis, continuing through chemo and surgery, then continuing to the present.
Esme was a typical nine year old girl – she loved art, playing with her dolls, and her dance and gymnastics classes. During one of her gymnastics classes, she collided with another girl, her head hitting Esme’s left upper arm. When she got home, there was some bruising like you would expect. The bruising went away but the area was still somewhat swollen. After a few weeks, Esme would start to complain about pain in her arm at night and the swelling was still present.
We researched and thought maybe it was just a hematoma that hadn’t resolved but made an appointment for an x-ray to find out for sure. On the morning of December 11, 2013, Esme and her twin sister Maslin got dressed for school and grabbed their packed lunches as usual. Maslin got dropped off at school and we planned on dropping Esme at school after her x-ray. When the doctor came in to give us the results, we could tell by the look on his face that something was wrong. And that’s where this story begins…
